The Deal with the DTV Transition

November 18, 2008

We have all heard about the DTV transition which is happening on February 17, 2009 but people are still wondering what the bottom line is. The official government site answers lots of specific questions. Most people just want the bottom line though. So to sum it up:

  • If you currently have a DTV enabled TV you will not be affected.
  • If you have an analog TV you will not be affected if you already have cable or satellite service.

If you want to keep your analog TV you have 2 choices:

Considering that people are fairly financially strapped at the moment, it seems like a great Christmas gift to the whole family that will keep on giving to exercise one of these options for your family for the holiday. If you take the government coupon, you won’t have to pay much out of pocket. If you get cable or satellite service (depending on your package) you won’t have big upfront financial obligations as the costs are spread out over your service package. Plus, it gives to the entire family, just in time for the transition!
